Domestic Violence | Gaali Free India

Despite our values of freedom and respect, domestic violence remains a painful reality for many families across India. Abuse is more than physical harm—it includes harsh words, gaalis, and degrading comments that slowly erode confidence and self-worth.

Domestic violence is a pattern of behavior where one partner uses various forms of control—whether physical, emotional, sexual, or financial—to dominate the other. Beyond physical harm, verbal abuse, manipulation, and financial restriction are all tactics meant to maintain power in the relationship.

The impact of domestic violence doesn’t stop at the partner being abused. It ripples through the entire family. Children exposed to violence at home often lose their sense of safety, developing emotional scars that can follow them into adulthood, manifesting as anxiety, depression, and struggles with relationships. Other family members live under constant stress, feeling trapped and fearful, which erodes trust and stability within the household. Rather than growing together, families caught in cycles of violence face isolation and trauma that hinder their potential for happiness and unity.

The statistics are staggering. Nearly 18% of children have been exposed to physical violence between partners, and a recent WHO survey found that over 60% of children reported witnessing or experiencing some form of violence within the past year. This reveals the heartbreaking extent of children's exposure to violence in their lives.

In India, according to the National Family and Health Survey (NFHS-5), around 32% of married women have experienced some form of spousal abuse, whether physical, emotional, or sexual. Physical abuse is the most common at 28%, followed by emotional abuse at 14%, and sexual violence at 6%. These numbers paint a troubling picture and underscore the need for a society free from abuse and violence.

Verbal abuse, particularly, often leads to an escalating cycle of violence. Hurtful words open the door to emotional and physical harm. Gaali Free India is about creating a culture where harmful language and actions have no place.

Words shape our surroundings. Abusive language within families creates a toxic environment, teaching children that aggression and disrespect are acceptable. By choosing respectful language, we foster positivity, making homes and communities safer. Let’s work together for a cleaner, kinder India where violence and hurtful words have no place.
